Backwoods Carebear

Monday night we went to go see Dolly Parton at Casino Rama with some friends. We started off with a two and a half hour drive through slushy snow in rush hour traffic to get to the casino (it was the first snow this season so not fun at all). Dinner was the tackiest Chinese buffet I’ve ever had. Very middle America mall version of Chinese food with lots of orange colour sauces and deep fried everything. They even had potato salad! Ahh yes, I remember when I was a kid my mother used to bring me a steaming hot bowl of… potato salad?
Anyways, the concert was PACKED. Mostly with old folks and high rollers who’ve earned their comp tickets though hours spent in front of the slot machines. Lots of “Pobody’s Nerfect” sweatshirts and fanny packs in the crowd. I think we might’ve been the youngest peeps there!
With all the pushing and shoving we were Kinda frazzled by the time we sat down at our seats. The rush-rush-rushing around and heartburn has caught up with us and we were pooped. But when the lights dimmed and the Dolly walked on stage all our crankiness instantly melted away. Wow she’s like a living doll! She looked beautiful and sounded like an angel. That woman got on stage and played, I kid you not, a total of 6 different instruments! All the instruments were of course covered in glitter and rhinestones and matched her outfit perfectly (love her!). She told us lots of little stories about her life growing up as a “Backwoods Barbie”. Stories about her growing up poor and overcoming obstacles, Stories that make us smile.
Which brings me to my point… I swear that woman is like a Care Bear! She gets on stage with a big ol’ smile and just BEAMS this happy feel good energy into the crowd. No matter how cranky you might be feeling, you can’t help but feel good after one of her concerts. I’d go and see her again in a heartbeat. I *heart* Dolly!

For someone who is 4 foot nothing and less than 100lbs, the woman can belt out a tune!
Polar fleece is definitely the official fabric of Orillia. Going to Casino Rama was like walking into a glorified bingo hall.
