David Sedaris
10th December, 08
Friends of mine had last minute tickets to attend David Sedaris’s book reading last night. In an attempt to gain access back to my social group after being MIA for the last 4 weeks, I decided to tag along.
Let’s be honest right off the bat, I’m not too familiar with the writings of David Sedaris (yes you can start stoning me), but have heard great things. I am familiar with and love his sister Amy’s work, and had faith that growing up in the same family must mean they had a similar talents.
The reading was set in the beautiful Massey Hall. The place was packed! It seemed like it might be quite intimidating for one person to entertain such a large roomful of people but mind you we all did all pay good money to be there so we’re all fans. This fan-dom was quite evident, and even annoying at times. When David first walked onto the stage and says “Hello how are you”, he was greeted with more than a few people bursting out in laughter. Really people hold your horses, the man hasn’t said more than hello. I wondered if I had missed an inside joke or something.
It’s easy to understand why people like him. The guy was really funny! Plus he had an easy going and genuine manner about him. I hear that he’s super nice during book signings also. That he spends time getting to know a little about each person who’s book he is signing.
David read stories that mostly revolved around observations and musings during his travels as a writer. In the most deadpan way and expert comedic timing he delivers some of the funniest dialogue I’ve heard in ages. He told us stories of his book tour (which funnily enough started and ended in Costco of all places), to insights into air travel (beware of crop dusting).
I don’t think I have read enough of his work to make a fair assessment (without being chewed up by long time Sedaris fans), but from what I heard last night I really like his writing. I’m not generally a fiction reader for the most part, but I think I will be picking up something of his to muse over this holiday season.
