The good, the bad and the ugly

23rd February, 09

While giving the boy a ride into work this morning, my daily dose of the “Rat Race”, I noticed more than one woman walking around the financial district wearing tall boots with schpants (a cross between shorts and pants). With about 2 inches of calf peaking out from below the pants and above the boots, it looked quite comical. “It’s going around.” says the boy, talking like it was the flu or something. Gee I hope I don’t catch the “Schpants with boots” this season. Why subject 2 inches of your calf to the bitter cold winds I wonder. Is it like calf cleavage? Is it sexy? I have no idea.

Oh who am I to judge. Over the weekend I spent an afternoon cleaning out my basement. The only thing messier than being a pack rat is being a shopaholic pack rat. My I’m-sure-I’ll-use-it-one-day mentality has gotten out of hand. I mean I might need that three quarter roll of “Happy Birthday Trish” wrapping paper right? I don’t even know anyone named Trish!

I was forced to face some of my own fashion atrocities of my yester-years. Really how many pairs of 5 inch platform boots did I need? I must have been permanently walking around on stilts in high school. Is that a belt or a skirt? Well it’s too narrow for either. What is this a wig? Was I in the witness protection program? You’ve got to me kidding me!

Ahh yes my deconstruct / reconstruct phase. A box full of band t-shirts all hacked up and bedazzled to death. I donated all of these. The idea of seeing midriff bearing homeless men walking around with sparkly “rock on!” t-shirts this summer made me giggle.

I found heaps upon heaps of black suit jackets, turtle necks and dress pants? Boooooring! Obviously these were my “big girl clothes” for when I worked at the Evil Empire. Why did I keep all this? Did I think I was ever going to go back in the boardroom with a bunch of stiffs ever again?

And how many times have I gotten the knitting bug? Too many evidently. Everytime I get an urge I must’ve gone out and bought a pair of needles and more wool. There’s an entire box of assorted wools that haven’t even been used. Well at least I can donate the unused wool which is more than I can say for the poorly knit scarves which accompanied them. Those are going in the trash.

I did find a couple things I was glad to have held onto. I found some Hello Kitty stuff. Alright fine you got me, I found A LOT of Hello Kitty stuff! Earrings, plush, a pink lighter, tooth brush holder and stationery. I kept those ‘cos I admit I’ll never grow out of Hello Kitty. I also came across some old vinyl which is great. I don’t have a record player but I might some day. There were scraps of vintage fabrics I had forgotten I held onto which was a nice surprise.

Anyways the whole experience was kinda fun in a traumatic kind of way. Faced with the past we all feel better about where we are today. It’s like detox, throwing away junk that has been clogging the physical and mental arteries. Plus it gives me an excuse to go shopping soon to fill the empty boxes I now have in the basement.

There will be no shopping…no filling of boxes…only consumables will make it through our front door!

We should ask Nathalie Roze to host a Schpants Party Workshop where you learn how to shorten long pants and lengthen short boots.
