Bruno

My friends and I went to go see Bruno last night. I’m sure I’m the 10 millionth person to review the movie this week, but what can I say, Bruno was brilliant!
Now I’m not a huge Sacha Baron Cohen fan or anything, in fact I had lukewarm feelings about his movie Borat. But Bruno to me was bigger, smarter and funnier. It’s hard to talk about this movie and not go into too many details, and I don’t want to ruin any of the surprises or give anything away. But I will say that I spent about 50% of the time laughing my butt off and the other 50% with my eyes half covered in anticipation that he was going to get beat up. Yeah it was awesome.
I had a question about the movie trailers they played before Bruno. First they played a new Jennifer Aniston movie trailer- a romantic comedy about finding the love of your life (with plenty of delightful misunderstandings). Second was some Vince Vaughn movie about four straight white couples going on vacation (with plenty of delightful misunderstandings), and the third was a Robin Williams / John Travolta comedy about being old (with plenty of delightful misunderstandings). Who did movie companies think their target audience was for Bruno? Straight white middle aged couples? The cast of 7th Heaven? Maybe I’m wrong but our theatreful of gay men didn’t think so.
Anyways back to Bruno. Go see Bruno and don’t let snooty pa-tooty critics talk you out of it. Of course this is not an existentialistic parable of the emotional struggle with fundamentalist undercurrents of reductive quasi-philosophy. Of course the art direction isn’t going to win an Oscar (though one could argue that the Ultimate Fighting champion Scene finale rivals the best of the best fight scenes in The Gladiator). Try not to read too much into it and go see Bruno for what it is… a good laugh.
