Sporty Spice

20th July, 09

Oh jeez, last weekend was quite sporty…

On Friday I got roped into going to a Blue Jays Game.  It was interesting because it’s been about 5 years since I’ve gone to a sporting event at The Rogers Center. I don’t really know much about baseball so watching the game was sort of like watching a foreign film (a really loooong foreign film) without any subtitles.  I was bored but at the same time was afraid to take my eyes off the ball for the entire 3 hours ‘cos I know as soon as I do, one was going to come flying across and smack me in the jaw.  Is this what they call “good seats”?

I may not appreciate the game but I did appreciate the camaraderie that goes on at this type of event.  Strangers handing over $20 bills to other strangers sitting next to them, in exchange for beers and popcorn.  This doesn’t seem to happen outside of being stuck sitting in a middle of a row during a sporting event.  I mean, when was the last time you handed a $20 bill to the guy sitting next to you on the subway trusting that he’ll pass you back a beer?  Not that they sell beer in the subway but you catch my drift.

On Saturday the boy took my mum to see a soccer game (as part of her belated birthday present).  Yes my mum, a 5 foot tall little ol’ Chinese lady, is a soccer fan.  It was her first time at a Toronto FC game.  I didn’t go with her because we could only get two tickets and thought it was best the boy took her (since they both like soccer).  If I took her it would’ve been like the bored leading the blind.

I was instead the designated mother-picker-upper and dropper-offer.  And incase you thought I got the better end of the deal (which is what I thought), let me just say that driving my mum back to her place after the game took LONGER than the game itself.  So instead of being stuck at a game on Saturday I was stuck in traffic.  I would like to personally thank the 20,000 Toronto FC fans and the 35,000 Blue Jays Fans who all decided to finish their games and leave downtown at the same time that afternoon.

We’re expecting house guests this week so Sunday was spent cleaning the house top to bottom. Let me just say that with the garbage strike going on in Toronto right now (day 25?  30?), we’ve been extra diligent when it comes to housework and cleaning but still, we wanted everything extra sparkly clean.  While rummaging through some winter hats and scarves up on the hallway closet, I came across a spider the size of my FIST.  I was paralyzed with fear, squealed and did what I always do in these situations, something the boy calls “The Bug Dance”.

I perform The Bug Dance, which looks sort of like a combination of the River Dance and the Running Man and sounds like a high pitched smoke detector, whenever I come across anything that has more than four legs.  The Bug Dance doesn’t kill the bugs (I’m too scarred to even go near the bug enough to kill it), it does however alert the boy to come over and kill said bug.  It proves more effective than Raid, but the moves are very tricky and takes a lot of skill to master.  One must have the grace of a figure skater, the endurance of a marathon runner and the lungs of an opera singer to be a bug dancer.  I vote for Bug Dancing to be considered a sport.

Oh Amy! I felt your terror and shudder just to think about it! Thank goodness for the boys, non? I can’t go near spiders either and do a similar dance to yours with a little bit of pop and lock thrown in. Be careful!
