Group activities

25th August, 09

So I’ve been going to the gym for a couple years now.  Wait scratch that, I’ve had a gym membership for a couple years now, and have been going to the gym for a few months.  It wasn’t until yesterday however, that I realize that those group exercise classes are included in the price of my membership.  Zoot alors!

Don’t get me wrong.  It’s not like I’m running to the front of the line to sign up for group exercise classes.  There is a time and place for group activities.  Things like going to the movies, going out for dinner, is fun in a group. However things like going to the dentist, sweating at the gym, is definitely what I would consider a solo activity.

But feeling like I haven’t been getting the most gym-bang for my gym-buck, I thought I should try out at least one class. There were a myriad of options, classes with weights, classes with steps and of course yoga.  Friends of mine have been pushing me to try yoga for the last 10 years.  Yup 10 years.  They tell me it’s relaxing, that I would feel great. I don’t know it all seems too frou frou for me and sounded about as relaxing as being trapped in room with fire ants. Needless to say I still haven’t tried yoga.  I’m not knocking it, I just don’t think I can keep a straight face long enough to endure the class.

So I decided to try out the “Body Combat” class instead.  It reads “Body Combat is inspired by the martial arts and draws from a wide array of disciplines such as karate, boxing, taekwondo, tai chi and muay thai”. Woohoo! Now THAT sounds relaxing!

Though apprehensive about group activities at first, I ended up having a great time!  There was no chanting, sharing, inner child searching and I’m pretty sure I didn’t see one piece of Lululemon clothing in that whole room!  There was however a lot of punching, kicking, wax-on-and-offing which was awesome (my arms feel like jelly today).  At some point the instructor guy even screamed “You guys aren’t zombies!  So let’s go punch some zombies!  C’mon let’s go!  Punch those zombies!”.  Now if you know me at all, those words are music to my ears.

Though of course punching zombies doesn’t do a hell of a lot except get you eaten.  Maybe next class the instructor will hand out barbells shaped like chainsaws to get us inspired.  Hope hope!
