Paris continued…
23rd, September, 09
Paris has been amazing so far! Though today has been the first day Ive been traveling alone. My sweet friend Luis left for Chicago early this morning. He’s been going to school in Paris for the last couple years and my trip just happened to coincide with his last few days in pairs. Sweet Luis has been familiarizing me with the neighbourhood were staying in, showing me around town, taking me to his favourite restaurants (he’s such a foodie!), translating menus and ordering our meals in French. Boy Have I been spoiled! Today I managed to find a bakery and point at a ham and cheese sandwich and say “et un Orangina s’il vous plait”. For dinner i went to a Chinese restaurant and pointed at a picture of some dodgy stir fry. Well at least I have learnt how to order a bottle of water to wash down the stir fry. “Une booty doh!” O.K. I know, I know, that’s not how it’s spelt but that’s how It sounds and it worked like a charm!
Today I spent the day hunting for vintage treasures. I’ll talk more about where I was successful and where I wasn’t the next time ‘cos vintage hunting deserves a whole post to itself! By late afternoon, after hours of walking, I came across a movie theater. Oddly enough there was NOTHING in the world I wanted to do more at that time than to go and watch a movie! Traveling alone is great ‘cos you can do what you damn well please. I went in and asked if they were playing any movies in English. My choices were District 9 which I’ve already seen, or the Oscar nominated, critically acclaimed cinematic triumph called The Proposal. Yes I watched The Proposal just cos i was dying to sit down and watch a movie and you know what? Maybe it’s because Ive had one too many teeny tiny cups of coffee or I’ve been going through TV withdraw (no TV in the apartment), but it didn’t turn out to be as bad as I thought it would be! Mind you I wad expecting the absolute worse.
*editors note: I must’ve been cra-zee with a capitol “C ” to think that movie was half decent! The Proposal played on the flight home and I couldn’t even stomach 20 minutes of it. It was terrible!! What like a driven, successful woman must be boyfriend-less because she has abandonment issues?? That really the whole time she’s just waiting for a man to come and tell her what to do?! Eek! Abort! Abort! *
After dinner I thought I’d go check out this art museum called Palais De Tokyo which houses contemporary art installations. I’ve been hearing awesome things about this space but more importantly, the museum is open till midnight which fits into my plans. Two subway rides later I arrive only to find the stupid exhibitions are closed till mid October. Grrrrrr! At least I consoled myself with the fact that their nifty gift shop was still open and browsed around a bit.
On the way home I managed to get lost. Not “get lost” like “get outta here” but literally get lost. It took me a half hour to get my bearings just because I got out of a different exit at our local subway stop! No big deal, its nice outside just perfect for a walk. Which brought me to a little charming cafe where I’m having a pint of Stella. “Un Stella grande” because I wanted it in a pint glass. It’s so nice to sit outside, have a drink and write this post. Again I feel completely spoiled.
Tomorrow is my last day in Paris. I don’t have much planned except I do plan on ending my trip with a visit to the Eiffel tower at night. I decided it was best to go at night when the lights are on otherwise I’d just be string at a pile of metal during the daytime. I also think it will be the best way to bid Paris goodbye.
