Better twenty years late than never

15th October, 09

We went to go see The Psychedelic Furs and Happy Mondays concert last night at the Koolhaus.  What a flashback!  I was a huge fan of both bands almost 20 years ago.  Yup I feel old right now.  Better go get my medic alert bracelet before I forget where I put it…

I’ve been so excited to see the Happy Mondays but man was I disappointed.  The performance was sloppy at best.  Front man Shaun Ryder seemed quite out of it for the most part and planted himself firmly in one spot on the stage for almost the whole show.  Back up singer Rowetta seemed to be the only band member with a pulse and gave a damn.  Honestly during the last song, Shaun Ryder left the stage mid way through and no one even noticed.  You know a performance is bad when you start to wonder why you liked the band so much in the first place. Boo-urns!

Disappointed with HM’s performance, we feared we have just become victims of a sloppy cash-grab reunion tour and didn’t really have high hopes for The Psychedelic Furs…

The Furs started their set off with “love my way”.  Wow what a difference between The Furs and HM.  Right from the get go they blew us away!  Here’s a band who’s been MIA for two decades, with band members all pretty much over the age of 50, giving it their all.  The sound was amazing and their performances  energetic.  For over an hour, the audience watched in awe and wonderment (like they were looking at a unicorn on stage).  Front man Richard Butler had some crazy dance moves and was all smiles.  Now here’s a man who really love and give a crap about his music!  He looked so great at 53 years old!  Like Richard Gere but with a brain.

The Furs performed like they knew we’ve waited 20 years to see them and was going to give us the best performance ever. We left the show falling in love with them all over again!
