Weekend Thrifting
27th October, 09
I had such good thrifting opportunities last weekend. On Saturday we got a tip from a friend of mine to check out the CAFTCAD (Canadian Alliance Of Film and Television Costume and Design) biannual movie wardrobe sale. We thought it was going to be just a bunch of vintage clothes, forgetting the fact that this is a movie wardrobe sale, meaning they’re selling costumes from whatever movies may have been made. We saw some weird things like Baltimore police badges, headgear from what looks like a lord of the Rings type movie (damn I should’ve picked one up for Halloween!), and almost brand new winter jackets which look like they may be have been worn by rescue workers in an avalanche disaster type movie. The fun thing was to play the guess which-movie-the-clothing-came-from game!
The boy got himself a complete outfit (shirt, pants and leather shoes included) for under $30, and I found a lovely vintage crochet shawl (which I adore and wondered where it’s been all my life), and a pair of girly crystal lamps (which perfectly match my front office). All in all I would say the sale was awesome!
On Sunday, the boy invited a friend over for an ALL-DAY-LONG sports marathon. Since even the sound of a football game can put me into a yucky mood, I decided to leave the house and check out the Woodstock Nostalga show. It’s a long drive but I figured I could hit a few thrift stores along the way to look for silk scarves to make my Kanzashi brooches. Plus there’s nothing like a thrifting road trip to clear my head (which have been clogged up with pre-show stresses lately).
I don’t usually find a lot things I like at toy shows ‘cos vendors mostly sell baseball cards and model cars at these types of event. But this time I was pleased as punch to find a couple cutie Japanese planters which the vendor was quite eager to get rid of (to make room for more baseball cards and model cars I’m sure). My collection of cutie planters is getting outta control but I decided to adopt them anyhow because they obviously needed a good home.
I also bought an adorable set of jigsaw puzzles. The nice lady who sold it to me said her grandma got this for her when she was a kid. I’m not a jigsaw puzzle person but the graphics on the puzzles were too adorable! I promised the lady I bought it from that I would take very good care of it.
Well that’s my happy hunting weekend. If any of you have some precious finds at flea markets you’d like to share, I’d love to see pictures!
