Fake Shipping Scams

In a continuing effort to warn other small businesses about these fake shipping / order scams and to expose these scam artists, below please find a collection of these fake orders I have received recently.
Seriously people, this stuff is for real and not just urban legends! I just met an exhibitor at the CGTA Gift Show recently who got ripped off by one these assholes. She lost $10,000 and the police are doing nothing about it. Here’s a quick summary of her experience:
My friend is a talented designer of diaper bags. She got one of these emails from a buyer in Japan (by the buyer I mean the scam artist). She was really excited that a store so far away was interested in her work so she emailed him back with catalogue and purchasing info for her company.
The scam artist wrote back right away and they exchanged a few emails back and forth, going over styles they’d like to order. The whole thing was very real. They even spoke on the phone a couple times.
For every style that was discontinued or not available, the scam artist would order another style. He kept adding styles until the order reached about $15,000.
When the order was complete, the scam artist tells my friend that he wants to use a certain shipping company he always deals with. He gave her the shipping company’s contact info and address. He asked that she pays the shipping company for shipping($10,000), then he would pay her for the goods ($15,000), plus the shipping costs (so $25,000 total), with a credit card.
Now my friend is no spring chicken so she googled the shipping company and the store in Japan that the scam artist allegedly owns. The shipping company was based in Atlanta Georgia. Both the shipping company and the store in Japan had a legitimate websites, contact info and by all accounts came across as real businesses.
So she pays $10,000 to the shipping company with her own money, then as promised, the guy gave her a credit card number to ring through all the charges. She rings through the charges and everything seems hunky dory.
Here’s the scam. Unbeknown to my friend, the credit card number the scam artist gave her is a stolen card.
When the credit card company found out that the card she used is stolen, SHE’S the one on the hook! Not the fake buyer, not the shipping company and not the stolen credit card owner. SHE (the merchant) had to pay back the $10,000 (plus they kicked her off the debit / credit card machine program).
** Keep in mind people, the scam is NOT for your goods. They couldn’t give a crap about your goods! The scam is for the money you pay to the shipping company. In this case the $10,000. **
The credit card companies just need to find someone to pay for that $10,000. In their opinion you’re the idiot merchant who accepted payment from a stolen credit card so you’re the one paying that back.
When she asked the credit card company if there was something she could’ve done to prevent this to have happened. The un-sympathetic customer service rep said, “Yeah stop being so stupid next time”.
When she went to the police for help with catching this guy (’cos he was still calling her AFTER she realized it was a scam, how creepy is that!?). Even with a slew of contact info, print outs of all the emails exchanged, IP address, names and phone numbers of the culprits, the cops said they were unable to help. They said it was a “Victimless Crime”.
My friend’s biggest mistake was to open herself up to these people in the first place. By responding to that first email she opened herself up to these assholes.
Hulk Mad!! It seems especially malicious for these jerks to target small businesses and not every small business can take a $10,000 hit like this. PLEASE let her misfortune be a warning to us all. Be careful out there!
Listed below are the new fake shipping scam emails I have received. If you’re reading this and have received a fake shipping scam email, please post a copy of the email in the comments section so others may see.
By leaving your comments, I hope this blog post pops up when someone new gets one of these fake shipping scam emails and decide to Google the buyer’s name.
Hopefully we can stop these bastards from ripping off anyone else. A big thank you to everyone who has commented!

Hi, Our business (a winery and vineyard) has received several very similar sounding emails. We were replying to people telling them who our distributors in the various countries were. But they were all starting to sound very similiar.
Today I received exactly the same enquiry/email that you mentioned (wanting a list of our top 10 sellers). So I googled them and came across your blog.

I had the following email from a scammer in 2009 “Hello,
I will like to get some items to be shipped to Malta,do you accept credit cards ? MasterCard /Visa
Kim ” In case anyone searches for this address it was from a gmail account: kimmcintosh11
Here is how that correspondence went…
Me: Hi Kim,
Yes, we do accept MC and Visa. They can be entered through the website, phoned in, or used with paypal.

Called the bank and reported the card stolen. Take that!

Then when they send a credit card…it is usually more than one card. So…i never trust theses things…sometimes I can internet orders will 10 pair of a large size. Anyway…they are not very difficult to spot.

Go my first scam letter. Had no idea how common this was. We exchanged about 10 emails getting the order ready. After a few red flags I ended the conversation and reported the credit card. It’s funny, but I feel stupid for letting it go as far as it did. I guess these guys are professionals.

I’m glad I found your site… I knew this was a scam but, now that I’ve read this I’m going to F**K with this asshole for awhile. The following is the email he sent me….

Such a sad story ending for your friend.
This happened to us about a year or two ago, and we went so far as to put the payment through but then got suspicious and never sent the money to anyone.
We then called Visa who was totally unconcerned because they knew they would be able to reclaim the money if it was a scam and/or a stolen card which it turned out to be. The police had no interest either.
Eventually we talked to the credit card owner who was totally shocked their card number had been stolen.
I hope more people are able to read your post and thread before they fall for the same scam.

The list keeps growing and for every person that has done a Google search and landed on this page, Yay! Good for you for doing a bit of research. Hopefully no one will get duped by this scam ever again!

Im sorry but you’re friend is not really a smart cookie. More like cookie dough… 10k for shipment upfront? that alone would be enough to make me run, fast. I’d also run the CC before shipping. that’s all you ever have to do really - Intl = pre-paid.
But the best way for these to be spotted is that they never EVER name your products or your company. I’ve been getting them for years and they’re always the same script.

We emailed back and forth a number of times, and quoted FedEx pricing (which was much cheaper), but he said he only wanted to use his shipping method. There were about 10 emails total, when we finally googled and found almost his exact original email on a scam site.
The 3rd party shipping was our biggest red flag. Also, they wanted us to wire cash…yeah…right…

THanks for posting this. I almost got scammed today. It got more suspicious when the shipper told us we had to wire money?! I work with alot of customers who have 3rd party shippers, but never have to wire money. Thats when I googled the email address (the REAL one was hidden in the code) and saw this website. So I googled the web address and this site came up. I wouldn’t have given any personal info over the phone or email but I am glad to know not to bother wasting my time!

I am a small business owner and received a message today. It sounded like a scam, but wasn’t entirely sure. I copied the content of the email and put it in Google and I arrived here. This is what I received:
Hi Sales,
Am ordering from Japan . I want to place an order from you. I know the difficulties encountered when shipping internationally, But that will not be a problem because i am registered with a shipping company whom i have used severally without any delay nor problems with my goods. Before i place this order, i want you to notify me if i am able to place the order and most important: If i can make payment with my credit cards Visa/Mc (Issued in the United States) because that is the only way we are set for payment without no delay. I don’t place online orders ,can i e-mail my ORDER needed then you can give me a quote here and make charges to my cards manually on your end ? Pls Clarify.
Looking forward to your swift response then we can proceed further as soon as possible.

You have an email from a “customer” above, Melly Garland. I own and operate a e-commerce store online and received an email from this person too. I have the credit card, ID and signature. Did you ever ship goods to this person?

Hello, My name is DAVID MORGAN, I want to order some product items from your store to my below address in Scotland but before i proceed, i will like to confirm the type of credit card you accept as payment (VISA OR MASTER CARD) and if you can ship to the below address. Please let me know asap, so i can proceed with my request.
